I am humbled and honoured to have been nominated by a colleague for one of our institution’s “Honoured to Care” awards in the category of “Commitment”.
From the start of my nursing career I always knew I wanted to become an NP. While the road has not always been easy, I’m so glad I chose this profession and will continue to educate and advocate for this important role.
Do you know an NP who you would nominate for a recognition award?

For those in ON, don’t forget to vote this Thursday in the Ontario provincial election!
It’s responses to questions like the one above that will help me decide who will get my vote this election. The primary care crisis effects all of us and NPs can and should play a vital role in ensuring that all Ontarians have access to essential primary and specialty care.

Today I had the opportunity to volunteer in my son’s classroom for “Scientist in the School”!
As a women working in a STEM-related field and particularly at this time, I think it is important to be a role model for my boys and an example of a strong, capable and successful woman. I’m fortunate to have the flexibility to utilize the education I’ve invested in balanced with time at home with my boys while they are young, including having opportunities like today to volunteer in their school!
Cheers to the many women in STEM - you ARE seen and you are valued!

Over the past year, I’ve been back in grad school completing a bridging program to obtain my Family All-Ages Primary Healthcare Nurse Practitioner certification I’m excited to share that today I wrote and passed my licensing exam!! It’s is definitely more challenging to study with young children, but my family have been an incredible support to me this whole way!!
My next NP pursuit? Hmmmmm I may take a short break from academics though I rarely break for long!! I’ll likely spend some extra time promoting “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner”!!

To piggyback on last week's post, I thought I would share some of the health benefits of pets for children!
Studies have shown associations between pet ownership and emotional, behavioural, cognitive, educational and social development. Among other things, pets support child development in the following ways:
- Teach responsibility
- Provide companionship and comfort
- Encourage empathy and nurturing behaviour
- Help build self-esteem
- Promote physical exercise and connections with nature
- Reduce stress by decreasing levels of cortisol in the body
- Understand loss and grief
In addition, a 2017 study demonstrated that children who grow up with pets are less likely to experience colds, ear infections, coughs, asthma, allergies and eczema compared to those not exposed to animals.
Do you own a pet? How have you found pet ownership has benefited you in a positive way? Send me an email with your experience!

If you have read “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner”, you may have noticed the cute family dog on a couple of the pages. This past weekend marked one year since the passing of our sweet beagle, Winston. He was our best friend and was with us through many defining events in our lives. Despite it having been 1 year, in many ways the loss still feels very fresh and we miss him every day. There are little reminders of our sweet book sprinkled through your home. With “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner”, he is forever immortalized in the pages of this book just as he is in our hearts

*Always wash with soap and warm water - alcohol-based hand sanitizers are not effective against norovirus!
Also, don’t forget:
- Get plenty of rest
- Replenish your lost fluids
- Monitor for signs of dehydration especially in children and older adults
- Eat small amounts of bland foods like bananas, rice, applesauce, toast and crackers
Has your family been affected by norovirus this cold/flu season!?? Email me to share your story!

Did you know that hugs stimulate the release of oxytocin, the “love hormone”? Oxytocin is a neurochemical that not only helps to create feelings of connection, trust and bonding, but has anti-inflammatory properties.
A 2021 study demonstrated that receiving hugs reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) responses to psychosocial stress, a finding that is independent of social identification.
Whether it’s your child, family member friend or pet, test out the healing power of a hug today!

NPs have played a vital role in enhancing patient care and outcomes for decades with tremendous growth over this time!
While barriers continue to exist within our imperfect healthcare system, NP leaders continue to advocate for greater patient access to necessary healthcare services, advancements in NP scope of practice and fair compensation to reflect this ongoing growth!

“My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner” focuses on the clinical side of the NP role specifically in a primary care-type setting. But NP practice is about so much more than that. We are leaders, scholars, educators, advocates and trailblazers. We wear many hats and improve patient outcomes in many ways including and beyond direct patient care.
Are you an NP? What are some of the hats that you wear on day-to-day basis? Email me to share your experience!

Cold and flu season is in full swing and it certainly started strong !
I find that many patients believe that antibiotics are the key to improving their respiratory symptoms. However, the majority of respiratory infections are caused by viruses and therefore, antibiotics will not help patients to feel better. There are certainly times when antibiotics are necessary; however, the over-prescribing of antibiotics has led to antimicrobial resistance. As a provider, it is my responsibility to provide necessary education to my patients and ensure appropriate prescribing of all medications, including antibiotics
The mainstay of treatment for viral respiratory infections is supportive management, which includes:
- Over-the-counter analgesics/antipyretics (like Tylenol and Advil)
- Rest
- Hydration
- Saline nasal sprays/rinses
- Cool mist humidifiers
- Hand hygiene
- Deep breathing exercises
Cheesy as it is, one of my go-to lines with patients is “the main thing you need is TIME, and that’s the one thing I can’t give you”

Had a wonderful time at my first ever market with my friend and fellow author, Alanna Allan!
It was amazing to hear from people who have an NP as their primary care provider or who had family/friends in the role. It was also great to chat with community members who are fellow nurses and physicians!
Our next market is this Thursday at Joseph Gould Public School’s Holiday Marketplace from 6-9pm! Come by and say hi and pick up your copy of “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner” and “Where Does Daddy Go All Day?”

My sweet boys took great care of me after I had surgery last week.
I find it a humbling experience being in the “patient” role for a change. I feel that experiences like this have helped to shape my practice by making me more empathetic by having a shared experience of vulnerability at a time of illness or injury.

Halloween is only a few days away!! Here are a few tips for your trick-or-treaters to have a safe and fun night!
Younger children should always be accompanied by an adult, and older children should go out in groups
Always look both ways before crossing the street and stay on sidewalks on well-lit streets
Include reflective material in your costumes to improve visibility
Avoid masks that obstruct vision
Make sure costumes are short as long fabrics/affixed items can be a tripping hazard
At the end of the night, sort through candy with your children and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items
HAVE FUN!!

Kickboxing away my anxieties!
Charting new territory naturally brings with it worries and questions. For me, leading up to my book’s publication, these worries and questions started to creep in.
How will it be received?
Will anyone want to buy my book?
Will my boys be proud of me?
I’m grateful for the positive feedback and encouragement I’ve received from readers, fellow NPs and family/friends as well as for a fab group of women at @okamikaimaandfit who help me kick and punch away my anxieties!

I would argue that including patients as vital participants in their care and health decisions is integral to the underlining philosophy of NP care in general! This process involves clear explanations and education based on each individuals’ and their decision-makers’ health literacy level to ensure they can make an informed decision about their care.

Why is this book right for YOU?
Scenario 1: I’m not an NP: That’s perfect! “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner” uses simple language that is easy to understand for children and adults alike! Many children have books on their shelves that explain the roles of various professions and this is just another amazing and important job that your kids can learn more about!
Scenario 2: I’ve never met an NP: With the current primary care crisis in Ontario and Canada, it is likely that you will meet an NP in the future for your healthcare needs! This book can help you and your family learn more about the role as well as how an NP can help optimize your health!
Scenario 3: I’m an NP and I have kids: This is ideal! Your kids will be proud to have a book on their shelf that represents their parent’s profession!
Scenario 4: I’m an NP but I’m not a Mommy: While in this story, the narrator is explaining what it is his mommy does, the content is relatable if you are an NP and also a father, grandparent, aunt, uncle or a family friend! It’s also a great book for you to have at your practice in the waiting room!
Scenario 5: I’m a teacher or a librarian: This is a great book to introduce children to this important healthcare role especially for career/“community helper” days!
If you are located in the GTA, reach out if you are interested in a book reading!

Today and every day, every child matters.
I acknowledge and give thanks to the land on which I live and work, and to the people who have cared for it. Today I am working in a pediatric urgent care clinic in Scugog Township, which is situated on the Treaty and traditional territory of the Missassaugas of Scugog Island First Nation.
Today, we acknowledge and honour survivors, their families and communities of the Indigenous people who have been harmed in the past and in the present.
As a healthcare provider I aim to provide care that equitably meets the needs of everyone.

Getting conference ready!
This Thursday and Friday, I will have a booth in the exhibitor hall at the annual NPAO conference in Toronto!
To those of you who are not NPs, this conference is a way for Ontario NPs to not only connect and network, but learn new skills, receive updates on best practices and new medical/scientific evidence, as well as gain valuable insights into how we can improve upon our practice to enhance the care we provide to our patients!
To my fellow Ontario NPs, I hope to see you there!

Today is yet another illustrator appreciation post!
During the process, I provided my illustrator, Patricia, character descriptions and reference photos, scene descriptions and general colour scheme/“vibe”, if you will. Patricia took these notes and brought the characters and story to life! For example, one of my notes read: “While Brother does not speak, he is always present looking to his brother adoringly and hanging on every word”. Those who know who “Brother” represents know that it is actually rare that he not be speaking, but he definitely adores his big brother!
Enjoy these side-by-side photos of my boys and the characters they portray!

Last week, my neighbour text me to ask whether NPs can diagnose ear infections. After explaining our scope, I directed her to the NP-led clinic where I work to have her daughter assessed. Not only did she receive a diagnosis and treatment for her acute ear infection, but my colleague made some modifications to her asthma management which was being exacerbated by her seasonal allergies. Her feedback to me was that my NP colleague never rushed her nor her daughter and he took the time to explain the diagnosis and the rationale for his treatment plan. He addressed her daughter directly while including her mother as a participant in her care. THIS IS NP CARE!! We were nurses first so that underlying nursing philosophy is still ingrained in our care with the addition of our advanced scope to diagnose, order tests and prescribe medications.
I’m so grateful to have this platform, both online and through my book, to help educate the public on what NPs can do and how we can enhance your healthcare experience.

️I’ve received some questions about the publishing process. There were lots of small steps along the way with many players including a publishing specialist, editor, illustrator, designer and promotions.
By far my most favourite part of the process was working with my amazing illustrator, Patricia. I provided my vision, and she brought it to life.
Here’s an example of the evolution of my cover!

Evidence has shown improved patient outcomes for those patients whose primary care providers include NPs.
As you will learn in “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner”, some NPs work independently while others work in teams. Other team members can include (but are not limited to): physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians and speech language pathologists. All of these team members play a vital role in providing comprehensive and holistic care to their patients.

There are 3 categories of nurses in Ontario: NPs, RNs and RPNs.
The main difference between the classes is the amount of schooling and scope of practice.
RNs and RPNs study from the same body of nursing knowledge; however, RNs study for longer periods of time completing a baccalaureate degree, which allows for a greater depth and breadth of foundational knowledge.
NPs are registered nurses in the extended class with advanced degrees (typically a Master of Nursing or greater), which allows them to provide independent healthcare services to patients, such as diagnosing complex health issues and prescribing medication.

My amazing two boys were the inspiration for the creation of my book “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner”. In my research, while there were a number of books about nurses and doctors including parents who have these professions, I found less than a handful (two actually!) of children’s books specifically about NPs.
The goals of my book include:
(1) To represent how children process and understand what their parents’ jobs entail, especially since these jobs can be complex and ambiguous to others, especially kids.
(2) Through a child’s lens, provide insight into the Nurse Practitioner role, which is a timely topic given the state of primary care shortage in Ontario and Canada and the need for NPs to help fill this gap.
(3) Demonstrate how Nurse Practitioners and nurses in general are more than simply “helpers“ or “angels in disguise“ but highly skilled and highly intelligent providers.
(4) Show the pride that children have in their parents and what they do.
The main characters have my family members’ likenesses and the supporting characters, who consist of “patients” and “other healthcare providers”, are highly diverse to reflect the community in which I live and work.
I hope you are looking forward to my book as I much as I am to share it with you!

Most NP programs require a minimum of 2 years of full-time clinical experience as an RN. NPAO statistics show that Ontario NPs have an average of 9.8 years of prior experience as an RN.
I graduated from my BScN in 2010 after having also completed a prior BSc. When I first began my Masters in Nursing, I wanted to be a nurse educator. At that time (I graduated in 2015), there were huge advancements in the NP scope of practice and I saw the important value of the role hence switching into the NP stream. I have zero regrets! The role continues to grow and evolve and we are so lucky to have strong advocacy through the NPAO! @npaontario

Here is a first glimpse at the cover of “My Mommy is a Nurse Practitioner”
While the intended target of my book is children ages 3-5, my hope is that those of you reading with the young people in your lives can gain a bit more insight into this essential healthcare role.
Next week, I will provide a few more sneak peeks, as well as describe the inspiration and goals of this project!
August 19, 2024
There is often confusion about what exactly NPs can do. The adjacent NPAO graphic provides a simplified overview:
→ Diagnose illness
→ Order & interpret diagnostic tests (such as blood work, diagnostic imaging tests…x-rays, CT scans, MRIs…ECGs, etc.)
→ Manage chronic health conditions
→ Make referrals to specialists as well as allied health providers (such as physiotherapy, social work, etc.)
→ Provide treatment - this even includes resetting a broken bone, suturing a laceration and other minor office procedures
→ Prescribe medication, including controlled substances
→ Provide education & counselling - this is an integral part of the NP role and the underlying nursing philosophy
Have you or a loved one ever received care from an NP provider for an acute or chronic issue? Email me to share your experience!
